In the Rocky Mountain foothills, Colorado may not be the first state that comes to mind when you hear the word “PIZZA,” but they really know what they’re doing. Indeed, Boulder, a lovely city nestled between trailheads and the Flatirons, may very well offer some of the greatest pizza in the nation. Boulder’s superb cuisine, music, art, breweries, and shops make it a desirable destination for outdoor lovers who also value proximity to urban amenities. Here are the top five pizza places in Boulder, Colorado.

BARCHETTA.

Pizza at Barchetta will blow your mind, but the restaurant itself is the embodiment of traditional American cuisine. This trendy no-frills eatery is great for gatherings of all sizes, thanks to its plentiful indoor and outdoor seating, its focus on quick service, and its tap wall stocked with drinkable beverages. There’s even the bar’s signature drink included! The locally milled grain makes for a crust that is soft around the edges and crunchy on the bottom, perfect for picking up a piece and eating slowly. The pie of your dreams is made with fresh, tasty meats, cheeses, and veggies. The traditional Margherita and Vodka pizzas are always safe bets, but they also offer a tonne of unique options, like the Zesto! From the Hell in a Bucket, which has duck prosciutto, mozzarella, cherry preserves, taleggio, chives, parmesan, and orange zest, to the Pesto!, which features mozzarella, farm-roasted and marinated zucchini, lemon, scorched onion salt, and parm.
AUDREY JANE’S PIZZA GARAGE.
Audrey Jane’s Pizza Garage is a Boulder institution, beloved by locals and visitors alike for its New York-style pizza and welcoming ambiance. This pizzeria was highlighted on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, so you know it serves you the genuine stuff. The pizza is produced using naturally-leveled pizza dough that’s gently fermented for three days before going into an electric deck oven. The result is an airy, chewy and light crust that’s filled with flavour. There are three pizza kinds to pick from, a New York Style, a Sicilian rectangular pan pizza, and Patty Style, which is a sesame-seeded, grandma-style pizza named after the owner’s mom. As far as toppings go, the world is your oyster, and there are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and white pies to accommodate everyone. The Crunchy Vegan, topped with hand-crushed tomato sauce, kale, sweet onions, Brussels sprouts, roasted cauliflower, garlic, basil, and pumpkin seeds; the PB&J, topped with prosciutto, burrata, arugula, jam, extra virgin olive oil, Mozzarella; and the Hot Honey Disco Pie, topped with sauce, mozzarella, salami picante, mushrooms, Calabrese honey, and basil.
The LOCAL PIZZERIA.

Pizzeria Locale is a cutting-edge pizzeria in Napoli, Italy, that honours the city’s historic cuisine and methods. This chic neighbourhood restaurant was established by the same people who brought you the acclaimed Italian eatery Frasca Food and Wine, and it has the same sophisticated but relaxed vibe, making it an ideal choice for any occasion. Try the arancini, the meatballs, and the wonderful antipasto salad as appetisers. You can get traditional pizzas like the Margherita with fresh mozzarella and basil or the Diavola with salami piccante, smoked mozzarella, and homemade chilli oil, or you can try something new like the La Friulana with crème fraîche, marinated peach, guanciale, red onion, montasio cheese, basil, and grana padano, created specifically for the summer. Along with excellent pizza, they also provide a wide variety of spritzers, aperitivo, amaro-based cocktails, and Italian wines.
BEAUJO’S.
The absence of a Colorado Mountain Pie landmark from any such list would be glaring, given that we are, after all, in Colorado. Here at BeauJo’s, we’re known for our Colorado-style pizza. After a day of mountain exploration on skis, a snowboard, or on foot, nothing beats a Colorado-style pizza. It’s a big dinner that’s offered by the pound, with an unheard of quantity of cheese, toppings and sauce. Ideal for family eating, post-adventure fuel-ups and alleviating some major pizza desire, the pies from BeauJo’s are the stuff of Colorado legends. Mountain pies feature a hand-rolled border of daily-made dough that provides a barrier to hold a mountain full of fresh toppings and they offer honey to dip those crusts like a built-in dessert. The Hipster features roasted garlic-olive oil sauce, spinach, roasted red peppers, pineapple, pepperoncini peppers, mozzarella, and ricotta; the Hamburger features Beau Jo’s pizza sauce, Italian sausage, hamburger, or both; pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, and mozzarella; and the Motherlode features Beau Jo’s pizza sauce, salami, pepperoni, meatballs, bacon, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, and mozzarella.
CROSSCUT TAPHOUSE & PIZZERIA.

Crosscut Pizzeria & Taphouse, located in neighbouring Nederland, is farther out yet just as noteworthy. If you’re ready to make a short journey with an extremely lovely drive, Crosscut will tickle your taste buds with its handmade wood-fired pizzas and craft beer. The dough is crafted with organic, Colorado-milled flour and through a 3-day fermentation before it’s prepared for you. Some examples of creative pizzas include the Hawaiian, which features river bear meats peach-wood smoked ham, pineapple, jalapenos, mozzarella, and tomato sauce; and the 3-Cheese, which features a blend of provolone piccante, grana padano, and mozzarella cheeses, fresh arugula, oregano, and a drizzle of lemon-garlic olive oil. A side of the house-made chilli honey is an essential for that crust. We really adore the dog-friendly terrace with views of the creek.
